Stroke... Is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease and cancer. 600,000 Americans will have a stroke this year. 160,000 of then will die. 28% of strokes occur in people younger than 65.

This page is not an American Stroke Association page. It is an independent effort to raise funds on their behalf.

The American Stroke Association...

• Funds research to find ways to prevent and treat stroke.
• Educates the public on stroke, including how to recognize it and what to do if you are having a stroke.
• Develops guidelines and educates health professionals on treatment of stroke.
• Provides stroke survivors and their families a place to get answers after a stroke.

The American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association, wants you to know stroke warning signs.

Stroke Warning Signs

• Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
• Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
• Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
• Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
• Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

Not all of these warning signs occur in every stroke. If some start to occur, don't wait. Get help immediately. Stroke is a medical emergency -- call 9-1-1.

Make sure all of your family members know the signs of a stroke. If you are having a stroke, you may not be able to act on your own behalf. Your children may have to recognize the symptoms and call 911. If you are treated quickly enough, you are much more likely to survive and recover.
