Train to End Stroke is a fund raising effort by the American Stroke Association. They are sponsoring and training hundreds of runners and walkers to participate in a full or half Marathon.

Facts about Stroke:

  • Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease where a blood vessel in the brain is blocked (ischemic stroke) or bursts (hemorrhagic stroke).
  • Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, after heart disease and all forms of cancer.
  • 600,000 Americans will have a stroke this year, 160,000 of them will die. 28% of the victims will be under 65 years old.

You can protect against stroke:

  • Know your risk factors and mitigate them where possible.
  • Learn the warning signs of stroke and know what to do if you notice warning signs.

Stroke Warning Signs

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body.
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding.
  • Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
  • Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

Not all of these warning signs occur in every stroke. If some start to occur, don't wait. Get help immediately. If you are treated quickly enough, you are much more likely to survive and recover.

Stroke is a medical emergency -- call 9-1-1.
